Walking Football Success For Huntingdon
Huntingdon Walking Football Group (HWFG) over 60s were runners up on Sunday in the final of the WFA (Walking Football Association) National tournament held at Nottingham.
The tournament was attended by the eight Regional winners and was HWFG’s first foray into the tournament. Despite losing their first game 2-1 against eventual winners Watford, the team played excellently, dominating in their second game against Hereford, winning 4-0. This run continued as they put 6 past a very good Manchester side in their third game, finishing 6-1 to HWFG.
The semi-final was against the winners of the other group Peterlee from the North-East who had won all their group games. The match was very tight - HWFG took the lead through Pete after good work from Gary and Paul. Peterlee equalised albeit slightly fortunately with a close in shot well-saved by David bouncing back hitting a player and bobbling back into the net.
The game ended 1-1 after normal time and went to penalties - three each then sudden death. At 4-4 Dave N made a great block to give HWFG the edge. This left Pete to take a kick and under pressure he did the business and smashed it home leaving a slightly shocked HWFG facing a 5th and final game.
The final was against Watford, the nemesis from the first game. Unfortunately, Watford proved too much and ran out winners 4-1 with Dave W again scoring, the only player to beat the England keeper on the day.
A fantastic team effort by all and for HWFG to be classed as the second best team in England gave all the players a buzz - Congratulations to all!
