Who would have thought that the Coca-Cola Football League One fixture between Northampton Town and Yeovil Town played on Saturday 18 October 2008 at the Sixfields Stadium would have had such an effect upon the history of the Huntingdonshire FA.

This game will now go down in history as the first Football League match where Huntingdonshire FA supplied the referee and both assistant referees.

Kevin Wright (left) was the referee, together with his colleagues Mike Blackledge and Neil Hair as the assistants. Never before has this Association supplied all three match officials for a Football League match.

It was a great day for all concerned and the match ended in a 3-0 victory for Northampton Town. All three officials were proud to represent their County FA on the day, and to mark the occasion Huntingdonshire were represented at the match by Mark Frost, the County Secretary and Council Members Mike Hair and Ray Bull.

As Kevin Wright remarked on the day, this will show to the young referees and the youngsters who have aspirations to be referees that the Football League is achievable by any referee from Huntingdonshire if he or she has the desire and will to succeed.

Speaking about the achievement, Frost said: “On behalf of the Huntingdonshire FA I wish to congratulate Kevin, Mike and Neil on a tremendous ‘first’ for the County.”
